
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When you’re designing an infrared heater for a bathroom, you’re basically playing a balancing act. You want it to get warm fast, but you can’t have it feeling like a heat lamp at a buffet—especially when people are stepping out of the shower or bathing a baby.
The “Blinding Light” Problem
Standard short-wave lamps have a nasty habit of emitting a glare that’s just too much for the eyes. It’s not just annoying; it can actually be stressful on the retinas, and infants are even more sensitive to it. To fix this, we don’t just “dim” the light. That wouldn’t work. Instead, we use special quartz coatings or filters. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. It strips away that harsh, blinding flash and pushes the energy into the infrared band. You still feel that cozy heat on your skin, but you aren’t squinting the whole time.
Keeping Water Out (And Heat Moving)
We build these to IP44 standards. In plain English? It means the casing keeps out anything larger than 1mm and can handle water splashes coming from any direction. We use heat-resistant gaskets to seal everything up so moisture doesn’t touch the live wires. But here’s the tricky part: when you seal a box to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. If we didn’t get the ventilation exactly right, the internal parts would basically cook themselves. To stop the housing from warping when things get hot, we use high-temp ceramics to hold the lamps in place.
The Trade-off
These units are designed to be easy drop-in replacements for standard heaters. They wire straight into the mains, no fuss. Now, full disclosure: using those spectral filters does mean you lose a tiny bit of raw heat efficiency compared to a wide-open, uncoated lamp. You give up a small percentage of wattage to make sure the light is safe for your family. To us, that’s a trade we’re happy to make every single time.
