
Keeping Things Safe with Gold-Coated IR Lamps in Chemical Cleaning
If you’re working in semiconductor fab, you know the drill. The chemical cleaning stages are a minefield of volatile, flammable solvents. Throwing a standard infrared lamp into that mix? That’s basically asking for a fire. That’s why we use gold-coated quartz lamps. We wrap them in specialized encapsulation to keep things from igniting and make sure the heat stays exactly where it needs to be.
Why the gold and quartz?
Here’s the trick: we apply a thin layer of gold to the quartz envelope. It shifts the emission spectrum, which is a fancy way of saying it makes the tube more reflective. Instead of letting heat bleed backward into the lamp housing, the gold pushes that infrared energy forward, straight onto the wafer. You get a much tighter, more intense heat density right where you need it. Now, quartz is great for handling thermal shock. But when you’re dealing with harsh chemicals, glass on its own just isn’t enough.
Locking it down in hazardous zones
To keep flammable vapors from touching a hot filament or triggering a spark, we seal these lamps in a protective enclosure. We’re talking high-grade gaskets and hermetic seals—nothing gets in. And a heads-up: you can’t just swap a burnt-out lamp in the open air. You’ve got to purge the system first. We’ve designed the housing specifically to stop “hot spots” from forming, because that’s exactly where vapors like to condense and catch fire.
The trade-offs (because there’s always a catch)
If your temperature isn’t rock-solid, you’re going to end up with wafer defects. The gold coating helps stabilize that output, but it does make the manufacturing process a bit more complex. These lamps are also a little temperamental. They don’t like being bumped. If that gold layer gets scratched or the quartz develops a hairline crack, your seal is gone. A couple of tips to keep them running: Make sure your mounting brackets aren’t squeezing the tube ends. Any mechanical stress is a bad thing. Also, don’t just crank the power to max immediately. Ease into it with a slow ramp-up to protect the gold layer during those first few cycles.
