
Why we put our heaters through a “humidity torture test”
If you’ve ever put an infrared heater in a bathroom or on a patio, you know the environment is brutal. You’ve got steam, condensation, and wild temperature swings happening all at once. Now, our heaters carry an IP55 rating. On paper, that means they keep out dust and water jets. But here’s the thing: a rating is just a snapshot in time. It tells you the heater is sealed today. It doesn’t tell you if it’ll still be working three years from now. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We put every batch through damp-heat aging tests.
The sneaky side of moisture
Water droplets are one thing, but water vapor is a different beast. It’s tiny. Over time, humidity finds its way through seals that looked perfectly tight on day one. Once that moisture hits the electrical contacts inside, things get messy. You get oxidation. Then you get resistance. And when resistance goes up, you get hotspots. If we aren’t careful, that’s how wiring burns out or your breaker trips in the middle of a cold morning. We use high-humidity chambers to force this process to happen fast. We’d much rather see a seal fail in our lab than have it fail in your home.
Mimicking a lifetime of steam
In a bathroom, the real killer is the “dew point.” Think about it: the heater blasts heat, then it shuts off and cools down. That temperature drop causes moisture to condense right onto the PCB and the heating element. It’s a cycle. Heat, cool, damp, repeat. We mimic years of this torture in just a few weeks. If the insulation resistance dips even a little bit, we go back to the drawing board. We’ll tweak the gasket or swap out the sealant until it actually holds up.
A small trade-off for a long life
There is a catch, though. To make these seals survive the damp-heat tests, we have to make them really tight. Because the seals are so secure, airflow is a bit more restricted. This means the outer shell of the heater might feel hotter than a cheap, non-rated unit. Because of that, you’ve got to give the unit some breathing room. Just make sure you follow the clearance guidelines during installation so you don’t overheat your wall. For us, it’s a simple choice: we’d rather have a warm exterior and a heater that lasts a decade than a cool shell and a unit that dies in a year.
