
Why you should ditch those old bathroom heat lamps for high-IP infrared heaters
Ever notice how those old-school bathroom heat lamps always seem to burn out right when you need them? It’s not a coincidence. Those basic bulbs aren’t really built for a steam room. Between the humidity and the occasional splash, the internal parts just rust away. Pretty soon, the bulb pops, and you’re back to shivering in a cold bathroom. That’s why we’re seeing everyone switch to high-waterproof infrared heaters. They actually handle the environment they’re built for.
Warm skin, not just the ceiling
Here is the thing about standard heaters: they try to warm the air. But warm air is lazy—it just floats straight up to the ceiling. You’re left standing there in the cold while the ceiling is toasty. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that hit your skin and the surfaces around you directly. It feels like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a winter morning. You don’t have to wait for the whole room to heat up; you feel it the second you flip the switch. We use short-wave emitters because they hit harder and react faster. It’s just a better way to wake up.
The “Waterproof” part actually matters
A “water-resistant” heater usually isn’t enough. You need a high IP rating—basically a fancy way of saying the guts of the machine are totally sealed off from the steam. We use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and reinforced glass to keep moisture out of the electrical terminals. Without that, you get “arc-over,” which is just a technical way of saying the moisture creates a bridge for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. If you cheap out on the waterproof grade, your GFCI breaker is probably going to trip within a few months. Not a great way to start your morning.
Getting it installed (and a few warnings)
These are designed to drop right into your ceiling. The wiring is pretty simple, but don’t just plug them into any old circuit. Infrared elements pull a lot of power quickly. If your wiring is too thin, you’ll see a voltage drop, and you won’t get that punchy heat you’re paying for. Make sure your wire gauge can actually handle the load. One last tip: these things gethot. I mean really hot. Give them plenty of breathing room away from your drywall or any other flammable ceiling materials. You want a warm shower, not a scorched ceiling.
