
How to pick the right wattage for your bathroom heater
When you’re looking at towel rail heaters, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really just a balance between how big your room is and how much heat you’re losing through the walls and windows. We use shortwave infrared lamps because they’re smart. Instead of trying to heat up all the air in the room—which is a waste of electricity—they go straight for the target. They heat the towel, or you, directly.
Getting the power right
You’ve got to look at the actual size of your space. If you’ve just got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a massive heater is overkill. A 200W or 300W unit will keep things cozy without turning the room into a sauna. But if you’re dealing with a big master bath (somewhere between 8m² and 12m²), you’ll want to bump that up to 600W or 800W. Otherwise, you’ll never actually feel the warmth. And a quick heads-up: if you go way too high on the wattage, your thermostat will kick in and shut off almost immediately. This “short-cycling” is a pain. It wears out the parts and kills the lamp way faster than it should.
The trade-offs
Packing a lot of power into a small heater makes it hit harder. Your towels will dry in a flash, which is great, but it puts a bit more stress on your wiring and the brackets holding it up. It’s worth double-checking your circuit load if you’re planning to put a few high-power units in one area. Also, remember that these lamps have a specific “reach.” Since the heat travels in a beam, you need to hang the rail where it can actually hit the fabric. If it’s too far away, the energy just vanishes into the room before it does any real work.
Saving a bit of cash
If you want to keep your electric bill down, pair your heater with a timer or a motion sensor. There’s no point in running a 600W lamp in an empty room. Actually, it’s often cheaper to use a high-wattage lamp for a short, targeted burst than to let a low-wattage one struggle and run all day.
